Malubustam Jewelry Collection

Crafting and designing jewelry brings Marilu a sense of peace and relaxation; If she could, she would spend all day concentrating herself in the creation of jewelry with the belief that each and every stone would have a different healing property to the wearer.   It’s her passion and what better than to work in something you REALLY love!

Marilu Bustamante was born in Peru and has lived in Miami-Florida for more than 17 years. She obtained her Business Management degree from Florida International University and specialized in marketing and computing, but she found in jewelry design the perfect outlet for her creative instincts.

She is self-taught, although she considers her good friend Virginia Ugarte (Peruvian Jewelry designer) as her beloved “mentor”. Her decision in creating jewelry began one day quite by coincidence: It was one of her best friend’s birthday and she wanted to give her something unique and special, something tailored to her friends needs as well as combining the appropriate birthstone. Her friends were so impressed with the result that they started asking her for similar pieces and that’s when her creative capacity flourished. While working at a corporation dealing with aircraft parts, she couldn’t wait to go back home and start creating those designs that were “hunting” her in her dreams, although there was not much time left after having to deal with the typical housework, (cooking, cleaning, attending dogs, etc) besides taking care of her two small kids, as well as husband Carlos (who by the way has been very supportive on her “creative” decision. )

Due to the economic situation of the company, Marilu became a part-time employee which gave her the perfect opportunity to try out more curious things about jewelry making.  She felt inspired by her family and friends’ reaction to her designs and this gave her the confidence to start diversifying her pieces and to promote her work.  She found overwhelming acceptance, to the point that she has now participated in a variety of exhibits.

The comprehensive quality of styles and jewelry pieces that Marilu is offering, with the latest unusual designs, makes her collection available for everyone that treasure having a piece of unique fine beauty, something distinctive and uniquely tailored.
Her intention is to transmit the healing properties as well as the positive energy of gemstones to her clients, as well as inspire peace, tranquility and happiness through her designs.
Her collection is a flirtation with all different types of semi-precious stones which give a delicate balance and a playful combination of color, texture, healing properties and exquisite finesse that transports her creativity and unique collection of fashion into a potpourri of colorful ethnicity flair.
Marilu uses for some of her jewelry designs a Peruvian sacred shell called Mullu (Spondilus) , (which is a bivalve mollusk that lives basically in the warm waters of the north shores of Peru, (Tumbes) .  When this mollusk is found more to the south it means the the average temperature of the sea has increased and it is a clear symptom of "El Niño" phenomenon, which means a disaster for the agriculture. But, on the other hand, if it is not found, means that the warm waters of the north has decreased its average temperature and sure it will be a year of droughts. The control of the " mullu " in prehispanic times was very important because it allowed them to plan the agricultural calendar ) With Mullu they made small disk shaped beads (called CHAQUIRAS, used by the Pre- Colombian Incas civilization. It was mainly used for ritual purposes; it was considered a signal of power and wealth) to make necklaces, bracelets, pectorals and religious objects.

Another interesting element used  by Marilu in her designs is a bi-color seed (red & black) known in Peru as Huayruro, This seed comes from a rare tree of the rainforest of Peru called HUAYRURO (wayruro) , the local people believes that having a huayruro or wearing a jewel made with it brings luck and prosperity to the wearer. It is usual to give them as a present or gift.

Marilu utilizes a variety of semi-precious stones found in diverse parts of the world, as well as stones used by ancient Peruvian cultures like Chancay, Chavin, Chimu, Mochica, Nazca, Paracas, Vicus, and of course the Great Incas, which were used for ritual purposes, to decorate ceremonial vessels and ornaments as well as to adorn the finest clothing and jewelry of the nobility of the diverse cultures that inhabited the pre-hispanic Peru since 1000 years before Christ.
All the pieces are made in 925, 950 Peruvian and Mexican silver, as well as Bally silver and pewter; twisted, welded, drawn and mixed with antique and modern stones. Every piece is handmade, all the designs are exclusive, inspired in those ancient cultures, mixed with a modern society that give each piece a special character that is not easy to find, making every jewel a one of a kind.
