Scientific tests have proved that the Ganges is extraordinary and possesses properties that no other river in the world has. Osho speaks about the hallowed river better known as the lifeline of India.
"If we take away the Ganga from India, then it will be difficult to call it India. "
Lord Krishna says, don't judge me by what I am doing. Among the armed, I am like Ram; I am like a crocodile among fishes The Ganga among rivers. Dear Arjuna, I am the beginning, the end and even the middle of existence.
The symbolism of the Ganga is worth understanding. Hindu heart is deeply attached to the Ganga. If we take away the Ganga from India, then it will be difficult to call it India. Everything else can be there but take away the Ganga and India will not be India Remove the Ganga from India and all the literature of India will become incomplete. Take away the Ganga and the names of many sages will perish. If we take away the Ganga, our pilgrimage will be lost; the spirit of pilgrimage will be lost.
Soul of India is committed to, joined to the Ganga since very old times as if the Ganga has become the symbol of our spirit. If a country has a soul and it has symbols, then the Ganga is our symbol. But what is the reason that the Ganga is so deep rooted as a symbol that even thousands of years ago Lord Krishna declared that among all rivers, I am the the Ganga.
The Ganga in not special among rivers in many respects. There are rivers longer than the Ganga. Many rivers much bigger than the Ganga are found on this earth. The Ganga is not bigger in length or width. It is not a big river. There is Brahmaputra, Amazon, Nile and Hwang Ho; and the Ganga will fade in comparison to these.
But the Ganga possesses 'something else', that no other river on earth has. And because of that 'something else', Indian psyche has struck an arrangement with the Ganga. Firstly, and it is an interesting fact that the Ganga is the most alive river on earth. You put the water of all other rivers in bottle; water of all rivers will decay but not that of the Ganga. Chemically, the Ganga is extraordinary. Its water does not deteriorate, does not decay, even after years. This purity is maintained in a closed bottle.
No other river has such quality of water. The water of all rivers is decrepit in this way. The water of the Ganga has certain chemical qualities.
Many chemical and scientific tests have been carried on the water of the Ganga. And now it has been scientifically proved that the water of the Ganga is extraordinary.
Its extraordinariness is a bit mystifying because the source from where the Ganga and many other rivers flow is the same. The mountains, through which it flows, have many other rivers flowing through them. And the minerals and elements that it accumulates are also found in other rivers too. Moreover, the Ganga does not only have its own water, just a small stream flows out of Gangotri. Finally, the water of many other rivers flows into the Ganga. The large streams that flow into the Ganga are from other rivers!
It is interesting that the water of a river before flowing into the Ganga has different properties and after mixing into the Ganga, its property changes to something else. What could be the reason? Chemically, nothing is known. Scientifically, all that is known is that there is some mystery in the minerals and chemicals. Science cannot say anymore. But there is one more mystery, and that mystery will one day or the other be discovered by science. And that mystery is: thousands of people attaining to the highest stage of life have lived near the Ganga.
This is what I want to tell you: whenever an impure man sits near water - leave alone stepping into it - the water is affected. And water soaks up these vibrations of that man and absorbs them.
Therefore many religions of the world have used water. Christians have used it for Baptism. The man who Baptized Jesus, John De Baptist came to be known as the John the Baptist. In the River Jordan - and Jordan is the same for the Jews as the Ganga is for the Hindus - he would drown a man neck deep, and himself too, then he would put his hands on the this person's head and would pray for his initiation, for his investiture.
Why did John stand in water? Because in water, it is easy to transfer the vibrations of one person, the influence and the revolution of one's internal conditions. It is easy: water gets charged easily. The personality charges water. An impression is formed on water.
For millions of years, sages of India sought to find God on the banks of the Ganga. And whenever someone attained to God, the Ganga was not left untouched when this was happened, the Ganga was also blessed. On the banks of the Ganga, each particle of its sand, each drop of its water, everything has become spiritually charged in a special way in these thousands of years.
That is why we built our pilgrimage shrines and temples on the banks of the Ganga. That is why people have been travelling to the Ganga. That is why people used to think that their sins would be absolved. The sins do not get washed away due to the Ganga, but because of the milieu, the environment near the Ganga. The Ganga is not just a river but a spiritual journey too. And there have been many experiments like these.
Twenty-Two Tirthankara's of Jains attained to Nirvana on Parshvanath Hills. Twenty-two out of 44 Tirthankara's have attained to Nirvana on one hill! This does happen casually, because 22 out of 24 are separated by thousands of years. In these thousands of years. Incredibly, these 22 persons reached this small hill before leaving the body!
This is pre-ordained, predetermined. Jain Tirthankara's have made an effort to charge that complete hill. When a Tirthankara left his body, this happening is bigger than the explosion of an atom. But we know about the latter; we are ignorant of the former.
When the scientists say that the explosion of an atom will release so much energy that thaw whole earth will be on fire. In Hiroshima, Japan, 1,22,000 people were reduced to ashes in five seconds in one explosion. The atom cannot be seen by the naked eye as it is such a small thing. And what does nuclear explosion means? An atom is made of Electron, Proton and Neutron. On taking these three elements apart, the energy with which they were joined is released, set free. That same energy can annihilate 1,22,000 people in five seconds!
One small atom that eye cannot even see! One lakh atoms placed one above the other will only amount to the width of your hair. This small atom destroys 1,22,000 people in one explosion.
And when the spirit of a Tirthankara leaves the body, then the energy that held the body and the soul is released for the first time. For millions of years man has been tied to this body. Now the soul is leaving the body forever. The energy that united both the body and the soul is released and scattered all over this hill.
Twenty-Two Tirthankaras have electrified this hill; it has become magnetic. And now after thousands of years, people have been going on a pilgrimage of this hill in the hope of getting touched by the magnetism.
Just as Jains have experimented on Parshwanath Hills, Hindus have done the same on the banks of the Ganga.
The Ganga is not a simple river; it is a spiritual odyssey and a religious experiment. Many have attained self-realisation, many have found the divine, and many have attained to Nirvana! Many have attained to the ultimate on its banks! All these people have left their life-energy on the banks of the Ganga.
Therefore, Lord Krishna says, "Among rivers, I am the Ganga. "
