Before I was the mother of little boys
My life was quiet, peaceful, and serene.
My walls were decorated with flowers and lace
and it always stayed rather clean.
Before I was the mother of little boys
my wallpaper stayed on the wall.
There were no little cars in my refrigerator
or plastic snakes laying in the hall.
Before I was the mother of little boys
I didn’t know little hearts held so many dreams
And I wasn’t afraid to check in the pockets
of dirty, grass-stained jeans.
Before I was the mother of little boys
my bathroom door didn’t need a lock.
But I never knew it could be so exciting
to examine a frog or a rock.
Before I was the mother of little boys
I’d never been to the moon or sailed the sea.
And I didn’t know that a simple kiss
had the power to heal an injured knee.
Before I was the mother of little boys
I never saw the fun in a pile of sand.
And I didn’t know it could warm my heart
to hold a dirty, sticky hand.
I never knew that tiny kisses and hugs
could give my life so much meaning and joy
I didn’t realize that my heart could hold so much love
before I was the mother of little boys.
