Greece's climate, natural beauty and history make it an ideal place for conferences and conventions catering to academic, business or cultural markets. Greece provides additional advantages for conference tourism (year-round sightseeing) and has made conference centres the focal point of its revised tourism policy. Local governments and the business community fully support this policy.

At present Greece has four small conference centres in Athens, two in Thessaloniki, and a few in other parts of Greece, including the larger islands. In Athens, however, there are also five exhibition centres, which also provide conference facilities. Usually though conferences are held in the larger hotels with conference facilities. It is obvious that the development of conference centres is a high priority in view of the upcoming 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. An initial call for interest, has already been announced by ETA, for the development of a major conference centre in the southern Athens area.
