The history of The H. M. S ESSEX The frigate was launched Sep 30, 1799 by Enos Briggs, Salem, Massachusetts, at cost of $139,362 subscribed by the people of Salem and Essex County. On Dec 17, 1799 she was presented in the US and accepted by Captain Edward Preble. In 1814, during the war with the British, she was captured. Later, Essex was repaired and taken into the Royal Navy as HMS Essex, and in 1833 served as a prison ship at Kingston, Ireland. On 6 June 1837 she was sold at a public auction.
