Budesonide is a corticosteroid that is administered via intranasal inhalation, oral inhalation, or orally to manage symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, asthma, or Crohn's disease, respectively. Budesonide has potent glucocorticoid and weak mineralocorticoid activity. Intranasal budesonide allows for once-daily dosing but has a less desirable side effect profile compared with other intranasal steroids. Inhaled budesonide also possesses high topical anti-inflammatory activity but low systemic activity. Oral budesonide has been shown to be superior to placebo[631] and equivalent to prednisolone but with fewer adverse reactions in the treatment of active Crohn's disease. [632] Low-dose inhaled corticosteroids are considered first line therapy for mild persistent asthma during pregnancy according to the 2004 guidelines of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Asthma and Pregnancy Working Group; budesonide is the preferred inhaled corticosteroid, due to the availability of safety information (see Precautions section) . [8627] A budesonide enema is approved in Canada and Europe for distal ulcerative colitis. Intranasal budesonide was approved by the FDA in 1994.
