Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) ranks second in importance, in terms of catch, among the tuna species utilized in the Maldives. Juveniles, measuring 22-25cm are mostly caught by live bait pole and line fishing, together with the target skipjack tuna. Large yellowfin tuna are usually caught by handline, and increasingly by longline gear.
Yellowfin catches in the Maldives are seasonal and their proportion in the total catch varies throughout the atoll chain.
Catch/Processing of Fresh Yellowfin Tuna: Fishing boats dock at our jetty and the fish is unloaded weighed, graded and processed immediately. We process Yellowfin Tuna Loins and H&G or G&G whole fish.
The loins are vacuum sealed in polythene bags, weighed labeled and packed in Polystyrene Boxes with gel ice. The gross weight of these is around 30Kg per box.
The Whole Fish average upwards of 20Kg are processed and wrapped in a foam like material and packed in Cardboard Boxes (61" x 18" x 14") with gel ice. The gross weight of these is around 115Kg per box.
Quality: Our Processing Factories are registered with the European Union (EU reiterated) . The facility maintains stringent requirements set by European Union directives complying with the EU preventive Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) -based regulations/standards.
