Tempered glass is produced by heating cut-to-size glass on the most modern horizontal roller type furnace in which the glass oscillates on ceramic rollers until a temperature of 6200 is attained. Progressing from the furnace, the glass moves into the quench area where it is rapidly cooled by blasting both sides with air. This rapid cooling induces compressive stresses to the glass surface while the center remains in tension. Althought the physical characteristics remain unchanged, the additional stresses created within the glass increases its strength by 4-5 times that of annealed glass of equal thickness.
